No Such Thing as an ‘Oppressive Patriarchy.’ In Fact, the Truth is the Very Opposite.

September 8, 2025 – Women currently hold 27% of seats in national parliaments worldwide (1). The UN Women agency has worked itself into a dither, claiming this number represents rampant sex discrimination. But only a doctrinaire Marxist would insist that every job category must consist of identical numbers of males and females.
The hypocrisy of UN Women is revealed by the global problem of workplace deaths. Men experience 15 times the number of occupational deaths, compared to women: Men: 6.2 deaths/100,000 workers, Women: 0.4/100,000 workers (2).
If UN Women seeks to promote a Marxist conception of “equality,” why hasn’t the group launched a global campaign to remedy the gender death gap, as well?
Neo-Marxists often uphold their claims of “patriarchy” by citing the so-called “gender wage gap.” The International Labor Organization says women are paid about 20% less than men (3), never revealing the differences in the types and amounts of work accomplished by men and women.
The dishonesty of the wage gap claim is revealed by these facts:
- Numerous studies show when work experience, hours worked, risk of injury, and other factors are taken into account, the gender wage gap goes away (4,5,6).
- In the United States, Asian women outearn White men (7).
- Patrice Onwuka of the Independent Women’s Forum has declared, “There is no gender pay gap.” (8)
Rigid sex quotas are not only unfair and unattainable, they are also demeaning to women. In a recent article in Evie Magazine, columnist Lisa Britton writes:
“Don’t be fooled—we still aren’t truly valuing women. For all our talk of ‘progress,’ the loudest voices today insist that women must mirror men in order to matter: chase ambition, project aggression, and define success almost exclusively through career. Ironically, this is not liberation at all; it’s chauvinism in a new disguise.” (9)
The bogus claim of an “oppressive patriarchy” also obscures the fact that men often are motivated by chivalrous impulses that benefit women, even to the detriment of men:
- On April 15, 1912, the Titanic collided with an iceberg and sank with 1,000 passengers and crew aboard. Of these, 74% of the female passengers survived, while only 20% of the male passengers lived (10).
- Men choose to work in dangerous jobs like construction or mining, in large part because these jobs allow them to financially support their families.
- Chivalry is pervasive in the legislative realm, as well. On May 10, 2023, the predominantly male European Parliament voted to approve the EU’s accession to the Istanbul Convention (11), a treaty that callously ignores the fact that half of all victims of domestic violence are men (12).
Once again, the feminist claims of an “oppressive patriarchy” turn out to be the exact opposite of the truth.
