1911614435455545344When Anthony Albanese came to power, there was no mention of gutting shared parenting responsibilities from the Family Law Act. Had he declared that intention, he likely wouldn’t have scraped together the votes to win. Why? Because most Australians, regardless of political leaning, still believe fathers matter in their children’s lives. But as usual, politicians are too scared to push back against the loudest voices: the professional grievance machine of the woke feminist lobby.
Now we’re seeing the consequences of that cowardice, and they are ugly.
Let’s be clear: removing shared parenting isn’t just a slap in the face to fathers, it’s a social disaster in the making. Strip a father from his child’s life, and you’re not just hurting the dad. You’re fuelling a cascade of social issues that start in the home and spill into our streets, our schools, and our housing market.
Youth Crime: A Fatherless Epidemic
The link between father absence and youth crime isn’t up for debate, it’s well-established. In the United States, over 80% of youth in prison come from fatherless homes (U.S. Dept of Justice). In Australia, similar trends have been observed. A study comparing Victoria and Washington State found that adolescents from single-parent households are significantly more likely to engage in violence i(PMC Study). The Australian Institute of Criminology has also linked unstable family structures to increased rates of offending ii(AIC Report).
We’ve ignored this for years because calling it out might offend someone. But ignoring the problem hasn’t made it go away. It’s made it worse.
Housing Crisis? Try a Separation Crisis.
While everyone is pointing fingers at migrants for the housing shortage, here’s a fact no one wants to talk about: every divorce or separation instantly doubles the housing need. Over 50,000 divorces each year in Australia, plus countless de facto splits, mean tens of thousands of extra households needing accommodation, many of which are led by a single parent.
Now add in the 100,000 domestic violence orders issued in NSW alone in the last two years. That’s tens of thousands more people, – men, women and children, needing suitable housing. And often, those DV allegations are never proven. Some are false, weaponised to gain custody or fast-track housing support. Yet there’s no penalty when a false accusation is exposed.
Falling Birth Rates: A Nation Losing Confidence in Families
Here’s another red flag: Australia’s birth rate is collapsing. The latest ABS data iii(Released: 16/10/24) shows the fertility rate has dropped to 1.58 children per woman, well below the population replacement rate of 2.1. And it’s not because people suddenly hate babies, it’s because they’ve lost faith in the system.
Young couples are watching a legal and social structure that punishes family stability, vilifies men, and makes parenting a legal minefield. When fathers are treated as disposable and false allegations are rewarded, is it any wonder people are thinking twice before having kids?
You can’t build a future if people are too scared or too demoralized to start families.
And Where Are the Politicians?
Silent. Not one MP has the guts to say what’s happening: families are being torn apart by ideology. Shared parenting was one of the few legal recognitions that dad’s matter, and it’s being wiped away without a fight. Politicians are terrified of losing the women’s vote, even though most hardline feminist voters already support Labor, Teals or Greens. Meanwhile, millions of fathers, grandparents, new partners, and even mothers who want co-parenting arrangements are being hung out to dry.
When John Howard stood for shared parenting in 2006, 12% of men shifted their vote to the Coalition. That swing could happen again, but only if someone shows the courage to push back against the cultural narrative and fight for families.
Final Word
Removing shared parenting wasn’t just a legal tweak, it was a declaration that fathers are optional. That children don’t need them. The data tells a different story. Youth crime is surging. Housing is in crisis. Mental health, suicide, and family disintegration are all trending in the wrong direction. And still, nothing.
It’s time to stop pretending we’re helping families by making it easier to remove fathers. We’re not. We’re helping destroy them!
