The NSW Department of Education has opened up a survey for parents and carers of NSW public school students in an effort to engage parents and the community in discussions about consent education in school.

Please take the time to complete the survey. The government is being lobbied hard by individuals such as Chanel Contos who believes that consent education should be taught earlier, more holistically, and include concepts such as rape culture, slut shaming, toxic masculinity, sexual coercion, enthusiastic consent, and queer sex education.

‘Sexual coercion’ sounds like a sensible topic, as long as it is taught in a gender-neutral way (it won’t be). ‘Queer sex education’ doesn’t sound relevant to the issue at hand. ‘Rape culture’, ‘toxic masculinity’, and ‘slut shaming’ are largely nonsense hash tags, framing sexual assault as something males do to females as part of their “patriarchal power and privilege”, leaving no room for male victims or female perpetrators. The only ‘rape culture’ evident is the current fashionable approach of shaming anyone who offers children and young adults advice about taking sensible precautions in order to stay safe, equating this instead with ‘victim-blaming’. Such an ill-informed approach will only lead to more young people being raped.
